Minnesota Conference
Michigan, Indiana, Urbana-Champaign, Penn State and Ohio State
indicated their intent to support for the Minnesota "Keeping
our Faculties" conference through both a financial contribution
and intent to send a contingent of attendees. Minnesota will send
a letter to each CIC SDO soliciting sponsorship for the project.
It was suggested that it might be useful for Minnesota to consider
creative ways of invoicing the partner universities for their
contributions to the conference (for example, the ways in which
HACU sponsorship is handled).
Strategies for the Future
The CIC Diversity Forum was a good effort and one we should focus
on as central to our near-term diversity strategy. The next forum
is to be held Spring, 2003. The groups of attendees should fall
into two kinds of attendees - administrative and college level
(those who are responsible for hiring), as well academic and administrative
peer groups who will meet and share good- and best-practices.
Purdue, Urbana-Champaign, Northwestern are all potentially interested
in sponsoring the forum.
There was a general discussion about retention issues for faculty.
Most report that they are able to attract minority faculty, but
they are losing them. Perhaps this topic could be explored more
fully at the Minnesota conference, as well as through best-practice
sharing among the Senior Diversity Officers.
Proposed CIC Scholars' Program
One strategy is to find a structure that puts potential candidates
(whether pre- or post- docs) in touch with people who are able
to hire them. Indiana has a summer faculty fellows program through
which they bring in ABDs or recent PhDs to work in a department
for the summer (for more information on this IU program, contact
torchins@indiana.edu).
We should sketch out a number of models that might be employed,
and use that as the basis for the spring meeting, allowing us
more time to develop strategy for the Provosts to consider as
part of their spring, 2002 meeting. The CIC staff should sketch
out several such models for this meeting.
The group agreed that putting forth an agenda for the Provosts'
December meeting would be difficult, and that we could better
formulate a strategy with several months of planning.
The next meeting will be held March 11, 2002 in Chicago.
