What is CourseShare?
CIC CourseShare: In December 2005, the CIC Deans of Liberal Arts & Sciences launched an effort to establish a voluntary, systematic method of sharing courses across the curriculum to enhance access to specialized graduate and low-enrollment offerings for all participating CIC universities and their students. The CourseShare initiative focuses primarily on offerings that can be “technology facilitated” to eliminate barriers of time and distance. Areas of curricular focus include less commonly taught languages (LCTLs), cultural and area studies, and other specialized seminars in the social sciences and humanities.
What is the purpose of the Conference Calls?
The calls will provide an opportunity for department heads, faculty, and others from two or more CIC institutions to discuss the possibility of sharing specialized graduate and low-enrollment courses via videoconference or other technology. Other possibilities may include sharing guest speaker presentations or lectures.
Each call will:
- Last approximately 50 minutes
- Begin with an introduction to CIC CourseShare
- Focus primarily on one of the following areas of study: African American Studies, African Studies, American Indian Studies, Asian American Studies, East Asian Languages & Cultures, Gender & Women's Studies, History, Jewish Studies, Linguistics, Middle Eastern Studies, Religious Studies, Russian * Eastern European Studies, Speech & Hearing Sciences
- Identify specialized, traditionally low-enorllment graduate courses offered at the CIC institutions participating in the call
- Discuss courses of interest to students which are not currently available at these institutions
- Explore opportunities for partnerships between interested institutions (such as shared guest speakers, lectures, or courses between two or more institutions)
- Outline next steps to facilitate collaboration
What courses and areas of study will be addressed during the conference calls this fall? How were these areas selected?
Calls held in Fall 2006 focused on possible collaborations where we had previously identified some interest. Building on the relationships established during those calls and in response to interest expressed by students and faculty, we selected several areas of study for Fall 2007 calls. If your area is not yet represented or your institution is not noted as a possible teaching or receiving campus for a course or area of study, please contact your Campus Coordinator!
