(new series, number 14)

CIC CLI MEETINGS AT ALA IN ATLANTA: Last month twelve CIC groups held meetings in Atlanta, in conjunction with the ALA Annual Conference. Highlights include:

  • The Digital Library Initiatives Overview Committee (DLIOC) explored ways to use OAI-compliant metadata harvesting services to improve access to digital library materials at CIC member universities.
  • The Collection Development Officers and E-Resources Officers continued working on a collaborative effort to retain the print editions of journals for which e-versions also exist.
  • The Preservation Officers worked on a multi-year planning process for collaborative preservation and access projects and programs.
  • The Public Services Heads and Technical Services Heads held a joint meeting to discuss assessment.
  • The Heads of Reference continued to share best practices about digital reference services, including past (e.g., CDRS), present (e.g., QuestionPoint), and possible future CIC collaborative efforts.
  • The Instruction Librarians discussed existing and potential collaborative efforts related to flash tutorials, repositories, and collaborative research.
  • The Interlibrary Loan Directors explored ways to revolutionize ILL workflow.
  • The Government Documents Librarians updated and reprioritized their list of proposed digitization projects.
  • The Acquisitions Librarians discussed ways to measure and assess the value of vendor services.
  • The History Librarians discussed canceling print subscriptions for A&I services reliably available electronically, serials cuts, and new e-resources and scholars' portals in history.

CIC PRESS/LIBRARY COLLABORATIVE ACTIVITIES: The CIC Advisory Committee on University Presses and the CIC E-Publishing Venture Task Force continue their work. The next phases of the work of both groups will be finished by the end of the calendar year. The Advisory Committee is reviewing current conditions for the presses, recommending areas for further worthwhile collaboration, and developing a vision of future roles for university presses. The Task Force is building a beta version of a collaborative e-publishing program--concentrating initially on scholarly monographs published by participating presses-as well as the necessary technical specifications, authentication and authorization systems, and business models. More information is available at http://www.cic.uiuc.edu/programs/UniversityPressCollaboration/index.shtml.

WRIGHT PROJECT UPDATE: The Wright American Fiction Project (http://www.letrs.indiana.edu/web/w/wright2/), a digital collection of 19th C. (1851-1875) literary works, became freely available for use earlier this year. During the first 4.5 months, approximately 75,000 searches were undertaken in this scholarly resource. Headquartered at Indiana University-Bloomington and coordinated by Perry Willet, the Wright Project involves the collective resources and collaborative efforts of ten CIC member universities.

DIVERSITY CONFERENCE FOR ACADEMIC LIBRARIANS: In April the University of Iowa hosted a successful conference on diversity issues and opportunities in academic libraries and higher education in general. The CIC and ARL co-sponsored the event. Several CIC member libraries and library vendors sponsored specific functions during the conference. Nearly 150 persons from 57 universities and organizations attended. They came from 24 states, the District of Columbia, and Alberta. Several of the papers, presentations, and sets of notes have been placed on the conference website at http://www.lib.uiowa.edu/cicdiversity/papers.html.
